For instance, in Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) battery, a heavier negative electrode gets oxygen from the positive electrode at regular charging. If overcharging the same battery, oxygen takes time to deposit on the negative electrode. This increases the internal pressure of the cell, making it leak or deform. It affects battery performance severely. In a similar case of overcharging in Lithium-ion batteries, they tend to have a temperature rise at the time of overcharging. Deposition of Lithium ions on anode and formation of the internal short circuit causes a high temperature and explosion-like condition in a Lithium-ion battery.
Overcharging affects the performance of the Ni-MH battery. An increase in the internal pressure of the NiMH battery can permanently lose its capacity and cycle life. It is because elevated temperatures due to overcharging causes loss of electrolytes from the battery, causing leakage. The battery performance of even the best rechargeable batteries does not get any better by overcharging them. However, it worsens the battery unless protection is provided inside the battery or outside of it.
Over discharging a battery and its effect on battery performance
Sucking out all the charge from the battery and continuing to do so causes over-discharging of a battery. Over-discharge of current from the battery severely affects the battery performance and even can bring destructive effects to the battery. It demolishes the reversibility of the anode and cathode of the rechargeable lithium battery. In a Lithium-ion battery, the cell heats up, causing a loss in battery capacity. On over-discharging of a Lithium-ion battery, its tolerance to impact and abuse reduces. Similarly, in Nickel Metal Hydride or NiMH battery, over-discharging increases gas pressure inside the battery and damages the electrodes permanently. Again with the proper design and circuitry of a battery, this can be prevented.
